g'deevnin' ya'll so i saw the listing for this show in the NY press and i was fukkin blown away by the lineup...for those unknowing who gerard malanga is, he was part of the inner circle of william s. burroughs and the beats as well as andy warhol's later on...he's done tons of photo and poetry work which has been published worldwide and also released a cD on sub rosa a couple years back...anyway...here's the long and short of it.. cooler_nyc_1_27_01 gerard malanga/dj olive_i saw gerard catting around all night and not a single person sed hi! or anything...too bad, so sad...but yeah..his poetry was awe inspiring...made me feel like i was witnessing something really rare and special...talking about reflections, shadows, the light of the world...great stuff...olive was spinning a lot of ambient soundscapish stuff...i wish i knew what but some of it was off his 3LP set i could tell as well as some well knowns like biosphere i think etc...worked well for the most part with malanga's poetry and at times perfectly accented the theme and mood of the reading....nothing short of dopalicious hrvatski_well i thought iD be treated to a tweak-beat drilly bassified workout but instead he carried on the theme of avant garde kraziness...almost all new materials, maybe one half of one of the tracks i recognised off of reckanwhatever...no fancy hardware, just a laptop and a mixer as well as a couple of effects modules i think..had a guitar with him but he didn't play, i think the bigwigs were trying to keep the lineup somewhat on time to the schedule but i personally have NEVER seen that happen at this venue....shit always starts kraaazy late...anyway...so he did a lot of dsp screechiness...a little video game blip bloop drill and bass at one point and some dubish hiphop/funk but that was the only beat oriented stuff he did...i was yapping at him the whole time, yelling "metal hell!!!" and "faster dood!!!" and other stupidities....when he finished up we tried to hold a conversation for a couple minuted but the intermission muzak was sooooo loud it was like impossible...he ended up giving me a Red Stripe beer and a copy of his Gai/Jin 7" too...that made my night complete.... thurston moore_xena_nels_two guitarists and on electronic harpist going crazy...attempting insanity sysnthesis...they were mos def the most energetic of the night that i saw....thurston broke 3-4 of his strings but kept playing and xena broke one of hers....all around a deafening reassurance that the asylums aren't doing a good job keeping the loonies in christian marclay_lee ranaldo_didnt stay for this one cuz i was bleeding out the ears from the moore/xena/nels performance and i had the thirst for a $.50 soda in the vein of Top Pop or Tropical Fantasy...marclay had two OOOOOllld school decks and a bunch of effects while lee had his geetar and about 20 different pedals as well as a violin reed...i hope they blew out the sound system cuz that woulda been the icing on the night cloudy with a chance of meatballs, centripdLL "a happy matt, a snappy matt" np>>"we had bass pound speakers, shell-toed adidas...original rap with new school leaders...grafitti art gangs, the fat gold chains..shock the world cousin..cuz hip-hop remains" pete rock-tru master --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
