This is good stuff. Guitars and electronics. This may put some of you off,
but this is really reminiscent of some of the stuff Eno did with James on
"Wah-Wah"...experimental and warbly at times, other times breathey and
beautiful. Sometimes you get a good guitar riff and that captures your
attention, other times it's a glitch, still other times I get a real My
Bloody Valentine vibe from it...and now and then, silly-sounding vocals that
just f*cking WORK with what he's doing.
Radiohead tried to bridge some gaps between electronics and guitar with Kid
A and this guy (Kristian Craig Robinson) seems to be exploring similar
territory artistically, though not necessarily musically. I don't know
anything about this guy, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he's
classically trained. He's definitely doing something different and you
should just find it and listen if you want to know more.
On a tangent, I think of A Reminiscent Drive in the same way, especially
with "What's Your Style?" from Ambrosia. There's something to be said for a
'scene' that trickles down from Aphex and Autechre, but this one is an
example of someone coming at these sounds from a different direction and
it's highly recommended from where I'm sitting.
For those of you who have heard this one, what can you tell me about this
guy? Is there more out there? Who else is doing similar stuff these days?
I'm definitely curious now.
