I have noticed a trend around here to refer to it simply as electronica. I
know that this is supposed to be a blanket term for all forms of electronic
music but I think it comes from the way many record shops classify their
music. Techno goes in the techno section, drum and bass goes in the drum and
bass section etc etc. Everything that doesn't fit into the normal categories
often seems to go under electronica.
Actually, as a word, I quite like it. I always did but then my first
encounter with the word was from the New Electronica label, not as some sort
of awful marketing-speak. That kind of confused me for a short while when
the term went into common use, I only wish that it really had been some sort
of soulful detroity techno revival.
Anyway, I absolutely loathe the term IDM. What's that supposed to mean?
Intelligent Dance Music as Opposed to Stupid Dance Music? Oh yes, that must
be trrrance! Now I understand...
Ross.
