[idm] press play_socal scape/plug research show last night

[typos and spelling fun galore!] ohmygodwhatafundubbybeatytime! so last night i was treated to a night of dub and tekno like no other: pole, burnt friedman, farben, kit clayton, low res, john tejada -- all live! and as a bonus groovy music from dj hoseh -- and im not sure if i heard mr manniquin lung spin or not...?? the setup was wonderful.. HUGE props to all the kids from dublab.com, plug research, and scape. first off, i love the el rey theatre. some folks, for whatever reason, dislike the place, but i really enjoy shows there! there were 2 performance spaces set up facing eachother -- one on the floor, and one up on the stage.. so basically, one act would play at one end of the room, then after a brief announcement, another act would play from the other side of the room -- this made things go quick and smooth between acts! perfect setup. the sound was sick. certainly not the best i have ever heard, but when you hear music from acts you love on good sound, well, it just seems that much more perfect. visuals: these were pretty cool, though nothing mindblowing imo. but they were nice, and unique! and worked well with the music. what i did like was the (somewhat silly) cameras they had watching the performers' hands and gear very close up like.. these images would be mixed in with the other visuals. the folks responsible are called visomat (berlin) farben: people were VERY into his set. even before he played. "oh my god, i cant believe farben is playing".. honestly the only thing i knew about him before i went was that he had something on a scape comp i own. after he played, i kept hearing how it was the best set of the night. i thought it was okay -- good DUBBY techno/house.. portions of which rocked my dirt hippie heart.. but, all in all i was not blown away. i would certainly see him again though :) kit clayton: i finally found some other folks that were into this set as much as i was. i think it was one of the best performances of the night, and one of the best sets i have heard in sometime. while some peoples dismissed it as dsp wankery and improv, it was one of the first monents in a long time that i was completely sucked into music and able to 100% tune out the crowd and distractions around me and just get immersed in the thick of things. not too many beats. lots of layered sound. i suspect this is what heaven would soundlike if jesus had a laptop (computer, of course he has a laptop). i think this is a good moment to make by obligatory comparison to coil. it was very coil (like the layers of sound stuff they do -- new and old). i will one up this comparison and compare something to nurse with wound later on. fun! burnt friedman: the first bit was MINDBLOWING.. and then he just kinda went on to some GOOD solid music. he had a whole collection of mindisc players and a mixer.. anyone have the details of how he was performing? it did not seem like he was just mixing from track to track... from what i understand he did something like this at sonar. anyway, i highly recommend this kid -- good sctuff! low res: hello! as if one of the most incredible artists around right now doesnt live in my hood! danny/low res is always a treat to see perform, but this time REALLY took the cake. what a fucking insane set -- supper jazzy, super spacey, lots of love going on! much like twin peaks music fed through a sun ra filter :) (after seeing mr low res in attendance at the recent sun ra awkestra show, some things just make a lot of sense). he also incorportated live drums, occasional horns (what as he playing?), and an mc (one of the shadow huntaz) in a VERY tasteful manner. there was a point where i really felt like i could have been watching a nurse with would performance, circa rock&rollstation, too.. ahh, yeah. pole: i like pole. i was super impressed with this guy the first time i heard him. recently though, i have not been inclined to buy all of his stuff because i think there is too much uniformity in his sound (though some of his remixes and more world beat influences are off the hook :). i expected last night to be pretty good, enjoyable, but nothing unexpected. well, i am not sure how this fellow does it, but it was out of control!! of course the standard pole sound was there.. but there was SO MUCH MORE!! nice layered sounds (appealing to the shoegaze kid in me), super funky beats!, and just DUB HEAVEN (which was to be expected). man oh man. john tejada: i think john should get an award for being the sweetest of performers. why? because he records with his (very talented!!) mom AND includes her in performances (at least last night). no really, im a complete sucker for moments of sweetness (especially when combined with good music:) - and this was just grand. they performed the song (gira gira?) from the plug research voices in my lunchbox release.. which is a wonderful down tempo song with carmen (mom) doing beautiful opera vocals and john playing guitar.. the rest of his set was very groovy as well, but i only caught about half of it. i trust i will make up for that in the near future. the crowd: good, sizeable crowd.. not packed, so i am not sure how encouraging that is for shows like this in the future (please do more!!).. but more people than i expected, less people that what mr greg earle expected.
