the problem with roland drum machines and "drum machines" in general is that the sounds in them are preset and not very customizable. if you want to sound like autechre or something you'll probably be disappointed ... you'll definitely want some sort of effects to make it sound a bit more interesting. they sound good when run through some distortion or a filter that doesn't mean it's worthless though ... i still use my old R70 (which is arguably much more lame-sounding than a DR660) for sampling sources and easy quick sequences for sketching etc. if it's used and going for a cheap price, there's no reason why you shouldn't pick it up, esp. if you're on a low budget. at any rate it's probably a bit more flexible than ReBirth esp. in terms of sequencing control. plus the roland drum machines have good midi brains and can be hacked relatively easily to drive other MIDI modules ... all of Squarepusher's old stuff was sequenced entirely on a DR660 ... which is a testament to his dedication and talent if anything is :) josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Fri, 11 Aug 2000, Scott Allison wrote:
