Direct from Matador.. >> For those of you thinking October releases, it's Red Snapper, Jega, and Sad Rockets (Sad Rockets essentially November at Oct 31). Oct 31 is an MC Paul Barman CDEP, a good excuse to write about him, if you're looking for one. Pizzicato Five is mid-November but they're doing VERY few, if any, interviews. See below for details on these. As always, let me know if you need anything, or if you have any comments or questions about how you are or aren't being-- ahem--serviced by us. (tentative) RELEASE SCHEDULE as of 8/8/2000 **OUT NOW** BELLE AND SEBASTIAN "Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant" Pop heroes get loose. POLE "3" German vinyl-cutter Stefan Betke creates sweet dubby soundscapes with defective equipment. LIVE HUMAN "Elefish Jellyphant" SF’s remarkable Live Human disintegrate all barriers between improv jazz, underground hip-hop and experimental rock. Their largely-improvised music draws its own landscape, providing some freaky contour in the flatland of breakbeat; it’s a completely fresh spin on instrumental music. JIMI TENOR "Out Of Nowhere" Jimi has been called "the Elton John of Jazz" and "the Barry White of Finland," and has been compared to Sun Ra, Curtis Mayfield, Tom Waits, & Gary Glitter in the same breath. His 5th album is a major work, using a 55-piece orchestra for a drum machine & sample-free product, as freewheeling and mischievous as Jimi himself. SENSATIONAL "Party Jumpin" 12" Installment #1 in our Matador Hip Hop 12" Series. Sensational was in the Jungle Brothers for a while & has two albums on Wordsound. He makes super raw, lo-fi hypnotic beats with some fucked-up dusty vocals over the top. Totally weird and alien, not a far cry from a blunted Kool Keith. *A U G U S T* 15 COUCH "Fantasy" The first domestic release for this fantastic album, released last year on the German label Kitty-Yo (Tarwater, Tied and Tickled Trio). Couch are an instrumental Munich band with definite krautrock and after-rock vibes, but a genuinely distinctive sound; it’s one of the most likeable records we’ve put out in a long time. NME says: "Fantasy is Couch’s 3rd album of elegant, electronically-enhanced analog instrumentals, taking us on a journey of warmth & depth without the utterance of a word." Look for a new Couch CD on Matador in early ‘01. 29 THE WISDOM OF HARRY "House Of Binary" Words like "cinematic" and "minimalist" have been used to describe prior recordings by Pete Astor's The Wisdom Of Harry, but if you put them together all you have is a movie theatre without air conditioning. On House Of Binary, Astor combines his moody lyrical bent with even moodier music (think The The), but please—there's nothing ‘experimental’ about a band that nails it every time. 29 LARGE PROFESSOR "It’s About Time" 12" One of the most respected hip hop producers & MCs since his work with Main Source in the early 90s, Large Professor has worked with Nas, Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Tribe Called Quest, and countless others, while his solo career stalled under an unfortunate stint with Geffen. This is the first of two 12"s for Matador & is among his best work, with an anthemic sound and deceptively simple hook. *S E P T E M B E R* 26 SENSATIONAL "Beat Rhymes" 12" See above. *O C T O B E R* 17 JEGA "Geometry" This followup to 1998’s Spectrum (released on Matador last year) is another wild conglomeration of styles, drum ‘n’ bass to jazz to ambient to jungle to funk to hardcore…and back. Comparisons to fellow sonic extremists might happen if Dylan Nathan (aka Jega) stopped long enough to invite them. 17 RED SNAPPER "Our Aim Is To Please Red Snapper" Long-awaited follow-up to Making Bones, one of Warp (and Matador)’s most exciting releases of the past few years. At heart a guitar-drum-double bass trio, they add rapping, lush female vocals, and several other instruments to the mix, for a progressive funk workout that touches on innumerable genres while maintaining a tangible live feel. This is by far their most wired, intense, and beautiful record yet. 31 SAD ROCKETS "Transition" The third (and first domestic) album by Sad Rockets, aka Andrew Pekler, whose bedroom studio is a place where screechy moog/reverb-drenched Hammond, soundtracky noir styles, sideways r&b, appropriate nods to punk, hippity hoppity, suave romantic moments, sleazy jazz, high comedy and lots of low end somehow all fit onto 4 tracks. None of that laptop/ desktop shit either, this is all for real, recorded by a real guy with real instruments in a real way. Andrew was born in Uzbekistan, California-bred, and now lives in Heidelberg. DON'T pass this one by. 31 MC PAUL BARMAN 12" This and the previous 12" will be compiled on a CDEP. *N O V E M B E R* 14 PIZZICATO FIVE "The Fifth Release On Matador" The domestic (and geniusly re-titled) release of this fantastic album, which harks back to the immensely popular sound of their debut. Our version features three tracks exclusive to the North American version. *J A N U A R Y* 16 MOUNT FLORIDA "Arrived Phoenix" Mount Florida are the Glasgow DJ superduo of MP Lancaster and Twitch, who’ve produced some of the coolest stylistic collisions we’ve heard in a long time—equal parts ambient, cut & paste, dub & dance. Their debut full-length follows three popular EPs released on Matador UK during 2000.
