Have to add my recommendation:
Yesterday, in a weird find that doesn't seem to happen
often at Amherst's Newbury Comics (what the fuck factor
set to 9000) I picked up the French Paddleboat CD on
Canadian Scratch, and I have to say it was excellent.
Marching band drums with soft, non-confrontational "poploops"
(as they will certainly be referred to from now on) that
puts you in that happy, nostalgic, optimistic mood.
If the hallmarks of the Vote Robot sound (short bursts
of sonic experimentation) are a bit much, take it slow with
this record (which, IMHO sounds _nothing_ like the Vote Robot LP's).
Definitely strong.
At the opposite end of the spectrum was the other CD I got
yesterday, Mika Vainio's "YDIN" on Wavetrap. I really liked this,
and I think it's because all of the "songs" sound entirely different
from the ones that proceed them. He's still operating in that
"broken appliances" framework he built with the Sahko stuff, but
you can actually hear this music (unlike, say, the "medical"
Sahko releases) and some of the tracks are really new and different.
Suitably weird packaging and Finnish song titles as well: home run.
I'm just waiting for him to package a release in faux-black metal style.
Matt
