Well, I know it's a bit late but I've JUST gotten back from overseas so
here's a few Raven suggestions for cool non-idm stuff currently rocking
my world:
1) John Zorn and Tzadik-label type "Radical Jewish Culture". Other
groups include: Masada/Bar Kokhba (John Zorn really); Dave Krakauer and
Klezmer Madness; Naftule's Dream/Shirim; Uri Caine, especially the
Primal Light CD on Winter & Winter; Dave Douglas (principally for
"Charms of the Night Sky, on Winter & Winter); Hasidic New Wave;
Klezmatics; ...and the list could go on so I'll leave it at that
smattering...
2) Tom Waits;
3) Pop Will Eat Itself;
4) Massive Attack;
5) Bratsch, a French gypsy hot club/klezmer group;
6) Nick Cave - especially earlier stuff;
7) Some (other) Australian bands worth mentioning: Not Drowning
Waving/My Friend the Chocolate Cake; The Clouds; the Triffids; the
Whitlams; etc etc etc....
8) How about some classical composers: Stravinsky, Ravel, Debussy,
Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Schubert (chamber music), and on and on...
[Speaking of Debussy, what does everyone think of the new Art of Noise
album? It's so cheesy I feel like I ought to hate it but I just can't -
I've listened to it so much since I got the promo in London, and I love
it...]
9) And of other pop/rock artists, notable are: Beastie Boys; Bjork (fuck
off Wells *grin*); Tori Amos; The Pixies; They Might Be Giants;
early/mid Depeche Mode; early/mid Cure; The Smiths; Sisters of Mercy;
etc...
Ahem I'd better stop there I think!
btw, I consider Ninja Tune etc to be part of idm, and even perhaps
drum'n'bass along the lines of Arcon 2 and Dom & Roland, who I think are
both brilliant....
I also consider the more experimental electronic stuff like Mego
(especially Fennesz, Farmers Manual and General Magic), Matmos and
Lesser and so on to be idm.
Sorry, I haven't read most of the responses to this post yet, so I hope
there's not too much redundancy.
