Public Energy - 9; A Shocking Hobby - 7.
i've had ASH now for about a week, and i must say that it seems to be
lacking a lot of the "oomph" that Public Energy #1 had. i'm not sure what
it is. . .the timbre's seem simpler. the distortion is kicked into
overdrive throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't seem to have as much
expression or flavor as Public Energy #1. for example, the drum sounds
seem to be straight-ahead 909s and such, and all the distortion on them
reminds me of Skinny Puppy more than anything. i dunno. . .PE#1 just
seemed to drip emotion, while this new one is just aggro IMO.
i can't help but think that i'd be all over this record if i'd never heard
Public Energy #1. like i might have really loved G-Spot if i had never
heard Ginger.
also got the two on FAX a little while ago and i really like them both.
they're both mostly more minimal than the ambient moments on the last two
proper Speedy J recs. nice in a SAWII way.
