Subject: (idm) spool
anyone have discog's or a history for 'spool'? it's more ambient lounge
music than idm, true...
Alex -
I'm at work at the moment so I don't have access to the discs, but I can give a
basic plug for this one. Spool is a collaboration between jhno and another guy
whose name I can't recall, they released a s/t CD on Newdog Records about a year
ago. I was pleasantly suprised when I heard it, it's more ambient/trip hop than
idm. First track is the winner, a 20 min or so epic that soothes and grooves
nicely. The end of the disc started to sound vaguely post-rock-inna-Tortoise-
stylee. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Also worth looking into are his solo releases
under the jhno moniker on Delicate Ear Records. His "kwno" CD is the best of the
two that I've heard. Intro track has d'n'b running over a gamelan rhythm. And
last but not least, look for the harder-to-find "Fly" 12". It starts out with
the familiar strains of none other than the Steve Miller Band's "Fly Like An
Eagle" (normally I'd cringe too, but he pulls it off remarkably well) which is
tweaked and stretched beyond recognition. Finally a tight Squarepusher b-line
with erratic breaks kicks in as the sample fades out. This guy can work it on a
number of levels, above average stuff...Brock

time i send from my work addy it manages to do that.)
