Actually, they're not. Prerecorded discs are made from a different material
and are stamped like CDs, rather than the magneto-optical material needed for
recordable discs.
However, the data is laid out in exactly the same fashion.

This is exactly the explanation I was going to posit. Pretty cool idea, I
think. Try *that* with yer CDs.
