Really, it's my favorite topic, but as sir CSpot so eloquently declaimed,
it's not strictly this-listy.
ANALOG HEAVEN
This list is strictly analog synths, and tangentially emulations
of analogue synths. It is very active, and you need to filter
out all the "D00D WH3R3 R TH3 303Z" posts, but some of the most
knowledgeable people in synthesis are there.

ELECTRONICA
This list is basically all things to do with electronic music.
It's what I think of as the list where people from AH discuss
non-analogue equipment. Lower traffic than AH, primarily because
it's not at ground zero of the "analogue synth craze" currently
going on.

if there is a automated subscription address.
PC-DAW
Discusses using PC's for music production -- primarily (but not
limited to) hard disk recording, but also excellent posts on
digital audio in general.
MOVABLE-PARTS
Discussion of the production of techno and it's related genres.

NEWSGROUPS
comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.* newsgroups.
read about the various sound cards available for PCs until you puke.
