Aquarius (version 3) *is* the Peel Sessions cut. It's really lovely -
much warmer and not so wintry as the album cut. Many more voices and
samples though. This whole 3-track CD is classic stuff, IMHO...I thought
I saw it being dismissed as "a disappointment" somewhere, probably the
Wire, but I really like it.
Warp are issuing Peel Sessions from artists on
their roster regularly now, with a really pleasing minimalist theme to the
box design etc - much nicer than the 10+ albums! I think there's also
Autechre, Black Dog, and Plaid. There were two Aphex Twin ones planned,
allegedly, but I reckon they've probably been scrapped. Word was, they
were all very old stuff anyway.
Meanwhile, backing Aquarius v3 is a *very* different, beautiful version
of Olson, which I prefer to the album cut, and a tune called Happy Cycling
which I think was on one of the earlier BoC albums, like "Twoism" or
something. Happy Cycling is worth the price of the CD alone: It's
simultaneously spooky and uplifting, with a weird Gyorgy Ligeti atonal
choir sample too, rather like the start of 2001 when the monolith
shows up. One of their most lovely melodies. Yes, this challenges the
might of Roygbiv!
