sons of silence - silence fm (leaf)
'writing about music is a paradox, using one alien language to describe
another' avowed one wag and with 'silence fm' sons of silence have
confounded the avaricious genre hunters who seek to enumerate every
recorded utterance struck in the name of 'newskoolelectronica'
but..the natural instinct in appraising a multifarious album such
as 'silence fm' (without descending into meaningless and
extemporaneous prose) is that you begin to dissect and pick at
the bones searching for some sort of antecedent that will perhaps
reveal...errr..... 'where the hell are these guys coming from!'
a juxtaposition of lee perry's voodoo dub and rzl's urbane yet
surrealistic hip hop sortie's would be a fair indication of the
general mood, but that is an over-simplification, it's an experience
to immerse yourself in..soak up the atmosphere and then.....try and
disentangle the threads, some of the fragments i picked up on ye olde
cerebral reception unit were:
lonnie liston's lazy hammond organs...psychedelic wig out's of early
parliament...nailed to the floor rhythms of james brown...otherworldly
genius of black dog
on a couple of occasions the spectre of digi-dub looms on the horizon,
but this is held in check with enough restraint to silence the alarm
bells..
'digi-dub' is on the whole, with a few exceptions, an abomination in my
book..as if a bunch of stoned white middle class neophytes could
replicate the
magical and mystical worlds of king tubby and his brethren
but less of those misgivings...these sons require your silence
