In the Emigre DR issue, they discuss DR's fascination with Japan and Japanese graphics a bit. One of the Designers Republicans mentions that not only do they use Japanese kana characters, but they invent random characters that look like Japanese characters.

I was wondering about this too - just what the heck is the word? Brain? IMHO, DR have become really good at what has become the "recognizably Japanese" look - perhaps even better at it than a lot of Japanese designers. Maybe having the distance (geographically and culturally) helps them abstract and purify what they find in Japanese culture and design.
