In the Emigre DR issue, they discuss DR's fascination with Japan and Japanese
graphics a bit. One of the Designers Republicans mentions that not only do
they use Japanese kana characters, but they invent random characters that look
like Japanese characters.

I was wondering about this too - just what the heck is the word? Brain?
IMHO, DR have become really good at what has become the "recognizably
Japanese" look - perhaps even better at it than a lot of Japanese designers.
Maybe having the distance (geographically and culturally) helps them abstract
and purify what they find in Japanese culture and design. Here's praying that
DR book sees the light of day,
