was most interested in women recording solo instrumental rather than
vocals with a band. My impression was that there aren't any like
Aphex Twin or Autechre, who just use machines to produce music. Now
I know I'm not the only one. (I already knew that but it's nice to
actually have the names!)

I got a few names of women singers in bands that have idm and
ambient elements in their music. I think they are important but
their contribution is different:
the female singer of Loop Guru

Sarah Peacock (Seefeel)
Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance)
Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins)
Kate Bush (one of the earliest users of the Fairlight)
...and there are many others, I'm sure
