This may be tangential to your point, but since I kept seeing references such as the above, I made a point of listening to the supposedly good Sonic Youth albums (ie not the latest ones), and I think they are highly overrated - but then that's not surprising since there wasn't much else during those years that was any better. If you went back in a time machine, and prevented Sonic Youth from forming, I don't think you'd affect 1996 in any negative way. I think the ultimate musical effect of Aphex Twin is significantly greater.
