I think it's great that Matador's releasing Rocket in the Pocket, a subtle, smart and wonderfully engaging electronic record. I've been looking for the thing on vinyl for the last six months, and haven't been able to track it down; now I'll be able to get it for dirt cheap. Seems kinda grumpy and short sighted to chide matador and the like for licensing international stuff over here. Where's the harm? Cheaper price, easier access, more attention, etc. Seems like the only downside is that the obscurists among us are forced to discover music more obscure and unobtainable by those not in-the-know. Boo hoo hoo. Were it not for Matador licensing the great Burger-Ink record, I never would have known about all that Cologne/Harvest stuff that I now love (nor, for that matter, would I have known about Arab Strap a few years back). The rules have changed in being a label, it seems, and where labels were once regional entities documenting the sound of their city, they now document the sound of a few people's exquisite tastes. We all win. Oh, and: if anyone's got a copy of Console's Panorama on vinyl, color me very very interested. Question: David Shea dabbles now and then in electronic dance music. I've got Satyricon and love it -- especially the song called "Q", which is quite a workout. Where else? np: The Spirit of Beige, vol. 1 (Beige Records) rr
