The other day, on a whim I picked up "S.U. Corporation Presents Dub
Plate Selection" STHCCD15. (S.U. Corporation are the people that put
out strictly hardcore and strictly undeground compilations). I picked
it up at Reckless for $28.50 and I was thinking to myself, you are a
complete ninny for paying this much for a single UK import CD.
But then I got it home, and now I can't get it off my CD player.
It's got a nice mix of really fast beats, fast sequencer trix (gating/
echoes/reverses etc) combined with dubby effects, people with jamaican
accents saying things like "come selectah", occasional house diva
vocals, and slow melodic/bass riffs. I guess you could call it jungle
or drum&bass, except that most jungle bores the shit out of me -- this
doesn't, because the dub factor makes it musically interesting.
Bass-ically, it makes me want to dance around the house, turn it up to
deafening volumes, and when I'm in my car, I tend to find myself
driving over 90MPH when I listen to it.
Track List (*'s denote my favorites):
1. (*) Selecter -- Gangster Sound (Dub Plate)
2. How Many Ways -- Just Intelligence (Dub Plate)
3. (*) We Come Back -- Drum & Bass (exclusive dub plate remix)
4. (*) Big Request -- Gangster Sound (Exclusive Dub plate remix)
5. Illusions -- A Sides (exclusive dub plate remix)
6. (*) Sax -- Jazz Vibes (exclusive dub plate remix)
7. Exclusive -- Xclusive (exclusive dub plate remix)
8. Volcano Style -- Urban Jungle (dub plate)
9. Fire -- BDP (dub plate)
10. (*) Feel Good -- The Dominion (dub plate)
11. (*) No War Business -- Xclusive (dub plate)
12. Searchin Hard -- Uncle 22 (dub plate)
I actually like the tracks produced by Drum and Bass and Gangster Sound
the best. #4 has some really outlandish mixing going on, stuff that I
would never think would work together (really fast beats combined with
a slow disco bop) slid together with niceness. #6 is acid jazzy with a
twitchy beat; kinda strange/interesting... #11 is a harsh & noize laden
onslaught of dub that rocks hard and then goes into this smooth piano
riff that floats you away while the vocals have some guy in a jamaican
accent talking gibberish about rude boys, wickedness, and "no war"...
Where should I look for more trax by these artists?? Which DJs are
likely to play this style of music in the bay area??
Other things I'd like to find on this label:
* Illegal Pirate Radio volume 3 (STHC CD 9)
* Intelligent Drum and Bass volume 2 (STHC CD 12, 13)
* Ravelation live at Wembley "easter bank holiday '95" (STHC CD 11)
Anybody seen these in the Bay Area? Where?
