I don't mean this personally, but I've always thought that statement is
a pile of shite. People who lack unique ideas use that statement as
some sort of justification for their lack of creativity all the time. It's
usually accompanied by a snicker and a look of embarrassment.
My other favorite quote that people use is that old Stravinsky one:
"Great artist don't borrow, they steal !"
I'm sure he was being sarcastic (which he often was), but people have
taken it pretty seriously over the years.
I think musical thievery is great (hip-hop, plunderphonics,etc.), it
doesn't make any difference in the end, but it's really aggravating when
people try to cover it up and don't even do a good job at it.
