Metamatics: "From Death to Passwords" on the Neo Ouija label... really essential stuff. Very melancholic, pretty IDM instrumentals, with a few little vocal samples and spoken bits in between tracks. I'd heard previous Metamatics releases and not been particularly interested by them (especially the one on Dot, which I've heard is the least successful of the lot). Also, the side-project Norken, which is more along the lines of light Detroit techno, is worth checking out, too. Safety Scissors: "Parts Water" (Plug Research) From what I know this is the only Safety Scissors release available on CD. He has several releases on vinyl, though. SS is pretty much stripped down tech-house sounding stuff, with some more downtempo moments. "Parts Water" crosses over between these sounds continuously over the course of its duration. My favorite material from SS are the tracks on which he sings, in a not-so-great voice, but it seems to work really well for whatever reason! Venetian Snares: I've heard "Songs About My Cats" which I thought was alright. I'm not really wise to the hype that VS has been getting on this list... pretty crazy typical Planet Mu type stuff, verging on irritating. I thought the release with Speedranch was pretty interesting though, because it took the noise/hardcore aspect a little further (from what I recall, I only heard it once). Twine: they've definitely changed a lot since their first release. I would highly recommend going for the "Circulation" LP on Komplott, or if you are limited to CD only, I would hold out and wait for the "Recorder" disc which should be released by Bip-Hop any day now. The early stuff is a lot more conventional and touches much more heavily on typical electronic sounds of the time (1998-99) and drum&bass breakbeat... they've more or less completely ditched any references to these types of music and are what I only really could call melancholic, abstract avant-garde... You can get a sense of what the Komplott release sounds like if you check out the Hefty Immediate Action series, the 3rd 12" of which was done by Twine (this is compiled on the IA 2CD set too). _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I second that recommendation; in fact, I was just listening to it a few moments ago, and it's *SO* good... :) <nitpick> Still, my copy says it's from Hydrogen Jukebox, not Neo Ouija... ;) </nitpick> -- Kurt Bernhard Pruenner --- Haendelstrasse 17 --- 4020 Linz --- Austria .......It might be written "Mindfuck", but it's spelt "L-A-I-N"....... np: Richard Devine - Insil Segment (Aleamapper) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
