Last week I was lucky enough to find a wooden cage on my front porch which housed two Mad Monkey label cds and a small monkey named Cheeks. My girlfriend immediately took a shine to this unique cd packaging and claimed it as her own but while she slept earlier this evening i was able to 'borrow' the Mad Monkey cage long enough to string together these comments. First of all, the cds that are contained in this packaging are Neutral's new Font Translation Errors album as well as a special cdr compilaiton of Mad Monkey extras. First off is Neutral's Font Translation Errors cd. It contains 11 tracks that merge elements of many different genres from electronica to to d&b with some crunchy industrial touches added into the mix. All tracks have a very familiar melodic, almost poppy, sound that are kept from getting too poppy by it's electronic & industrial elements. Over the course of the cd a number of sounds & styles develop and deconstruct but all in a very interesting way. Influences i hear on different parts of Font Translation Errors include Scorn, Mu-ziq, Techno Animal, Squarepusher and even Depeche Mode & Front Line Assembly. Neutral has crafted quite a unique tapestry of sounds. One that you should hear for yourself to see if it fits you. See below for a link to RA soundbites of this release. The cdr compilation contains 18 tracks from the likes of Neutral, T. Miller, Fluroscopic Kid, Daniel De Los Santos, Brand, Mad Monkey Consortium, Erich Wolfgang, Neopithecus, Tamarin, and Army of 23 Monkeys. These tracks cover a variety of styles but generally in a lighter way than on the Font Translation Errors release. It's a shame that this cdr isnt more widely available because there is some great material presented on this comp with my favorites being the fluroscopic kid, t.miller and neutral's original version of bluye paper, and solenoid's gallup poll mix of neutral's hey ash. To hear some of the tracks from Neutral's font translation errors cd for yourself check the mad monkey website at: http://monkey.eliteware.com/releases/mmr03/index.html Now I have to return the the Mad Monkey cage before my girlfriend discovers it's missing.
