Half these are from people sending to idm-owner (that's me!) instead of

now. Dang andrew.cmu.edu mail-to-news gateways.....

I have the Eno box on import right now, and I must say I think it's
amazing. Truly amazing. It's 3 discs of his experimental music
selected by Brian Eno himself. I highly recommend it.

Oh yeah, I did mean FSoL, Mike.
Yessir,
Yessir, I have recieved an abundance of replies to my plea for help.
And especially since that (this) was (is) my first contact with the IDM
community, I want to thank you all in a big way. =)
All words are appreciated and very helpful. All things considered, of artists
my first purchase must be FSoL's Accelerator. I am tempted (boy am i)
to follow that with Amorphous Androgynous, but I think that I would be
better served by variety. And so I take the dive into the Analog
Bubblebath. Can't wait! Thanks again, all.

I too was disappointed with Nerve Net, but really dig My Life etc. etc. My
other Eno experiences are...
ANOTHER GREEN WORLD Half songs, half godfather of ambient stuff...if you've
ever seen the BBC arts programme Arena you'll know and love the title track.
Absolutely essential
DESERT ISLAND SELECTION Blissful compilation of (mainly) early proper
songs...if you're not after Eno solely because of the ambient connection try
and get hold of it
THE SHUTOV ASSEMBLY Erm...bird song, ambience, not so many tunes, no lyrics.
Didn't feel any urge to play it twice unfortunately
NEROLI Ditto, but no bird song and only about six notes stretched over an hour.
Sorts the men from the boys...
Don't forget the first two Roxy albums, as well!
Enjoy.

It is very safe to assume that those things I listed are in the vein I
am looking for. That's why they're listed. Thanks again to the many
helpful replies! Goin to order some discs today. b.

I think Nerve Net sucks. It's definitely not one of his best in my opinion.

Remember that My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a collaboration... but
still, Eno usually has great sounds and atmospheres... as well as some
interesting rhythms every once and a while. I can't recommend a good
album for interesting rhythms from him, but I would definitely recommend
Music for Films (I II or III), Music for Airports, and Discreet music.
These really are't IDM albums, but I think they might be more
interesting to you than Nerve Net.

Jean-Michel Jarre is a tough one to help people pick... for
synth-pop-newscast sounding stuff, I'd recommend Chronologie (his
latest). If you're into wierd sounds, Zoolook is pretty neat.. it has
some interesting rhythms also. The more "ambient" Jarre is towards the
beginning of his career- Oxygene and Equinoxe. Both of these albums
have washy-phased sounds and a few rhythmic songs thrown in.
I've listened to him since the 6th grade... and the older stuff doesn't
get to me. From about Rendez-vous on (Revolutions, Cousteau,
Chronologie), I think it's getting to be formulaic and boring.

You _must_ check out Mod Lang, at the end of University between Shattuck
and Oxford. They have nowhere near the overall selection of Amoeba or
Rasputin, but they have the good stuff, and they have IDM. Their techno
section kicks hell out of Amoeba and is solidly better than Rasputin -
Rasputin has more techno, but the quality is lower, whereas Mod Lang's
'Ambient/Trance' section could be renamed 'IDM' and I wouldn't skip a beat.
Maybe their buyer reads the list.

Just curious has anyone heard:
Jam & Spoon:tripomatic fairy tales 2001
Sun Electric:Kitchen
the reload album(what is the title?)
Was wondering what they thought of them. Plus there is another Sun
Electric album(was it ever released on CD?..it's a double 12". I have
it but forget the title).
Are there any other releases by reload? I have their mixes for slowdive
and aphex twin's on. So far I haven't been disappointed...:)

Jarre...I was into him way back, when I was about eight(!). To me, he did his
best work circa 81-84, that is, "Magnetic Fields", "The Concerts In China" and
"Zoolook" (way ahead of its time, uses samples of voices in truckloads of
different languages, probably his most rockish release with people like Marcus
Miller and Laurie Anderson on it).
Enjoy,
JHL
