critics, Malcolm Goldstein has received international acclaim for having
'reinvented violin playing'. Goldstein, as composer/violinist, has been
active in the presentation of new music and dance since the early 1960's.
His 'soundings' improvisations extend the range of tonal/sound-texture
possibilities of the instrument and reveal new dimensions of expressivity.
His work combines environmental and instrumental sounds using
improvisational and computer based composition techniques.

SUBTROPICS SOUND VIDEOS I
MIAMI BEACH CINEMATHEQUE, 512 Espa?ola Way, Miami Beach
Curated by Gustavo Matamoros, the Subtropics Sound Videos
Series will present experimental video works specializing in sound. The
works range from an exploration of the melodic and rhythmical dimensions of
human spoken language in Katherine Liberovskaya and Phil Niblock's
'Babel-On' to the social construction surrounding the definition of manhood
gleaned from Klaus Theweleit's 'Male Fantasies, Vol. 1' in 'The Maginot
Line: Thoughts on Theweleit' by Mark Eden. The Subtropics Sound Videos I
will feature the following works: 'Babel-On by Katherine Liberovskaya'
(Montreal/Canada) and Phil Niblock (New York/USA); 'Second Thoughts' by
Dennis Miller (Boston/USA); 'Hay Que Saltar El Lecho' by Patricia Perez
(Havana/Cuba); 'The Maginot Line: Thoughts on Theweleit' by Mark Eden; an
excerpt from 'I Need a Gig' by Michael Welch (Orlando/USA); 'Sounding
(version)' by Edward Bobb (Miami/USA) and 'On the Edge' by Ksawery Kaliski &
Wojtek Kucharczyk (Nantes/Poland).
FRI. 03.12.04 & SAT. 03.13.04 / 10 PM
from GERMANY: cellist FRIED DAHN
PS 742, 1165 SW 6 ST, Little Havana
One of only a few musicians to use the electric cello aka
e-cello, Fried D?hn describes his work as multidimensional with a focus on
electronic sound design. D?hn combines his classical training with modern
electric techniques to 'create a world of willfully entrancing complexity
and unmistakable commitment' according to Main-Echo, a German publication.
Reutlinger Nachrichten writes that D?hn 'projects himself into space,
transplants Bach to Mars, flies over Africa and Asia, [and] stops briefly by
Jimi Hendrix and John Cage'. In his most recent CD, 'Kiss My Guarneri', D?hn
presents his latest original collages, once again proving his flexibility
and experimental daring: a blend of blues fragments, shrill harmonies and
meditative sounds make this production a unique experience.
WEEK 3

WED. 03.17.04 / 7 PM
SHADOW PUPPIES
ROCKET PROJECTS, 3440 North Miami Ave, Wynwood
Shadows, angles, nightlight, manipulations, and more make
up the interactive screening of Shadow Puppies as part of the Subtropics
Experimental Music Festival. Shadow Puppies is a cutting edge New York-based
trio which conjures rich, complex, and entrancing worlds of electronic sound
and vision in real-time. Nick Didkovsky and Hans Tammen stretch the
boundaries of the electric guitar with an arsenal of objects, electronics,
and homebrew computer software, while Kurt Ralske interactively captures and
processes video using digital technology of his own design. The result is an
uninterrupted journey through sonic eruptions, video hallucinations, and
aggressive, entrancing mediascapes. This video installation documents a
recent performance by Shadow Puppies presented at Roulette in New York City.
The piece is encoded with different angles that can will be changed randomly
throughout the screening changing from the original live processed video
used at the performance to the post-production piece.

UNDERSTANDING SOUND SERIES: JAAP BLONK
in collaboration with MIAMIntelligence
MIAMI MUSEUM OF SCIENCE, 3280 SOUTH MIAMI AVE, Miami
The Subtropics Experimental Music Festival teams up with
MIAMIntelligence to present a lecture/ demonstration by composer, voice
performer and sound poet, Jaap Blonk. In a Dadaist spirit, Blonk finds a
common ground between music and poetry and takes the concept of language to
another level. Jaap Blonk, who discovered his inner and outer voice at the
age of 30, has performed in many European countries, as well as in the U.S.,
Canada, Indonesia, South Africa and Latin America. In addition to working as
a soloist, Blonk has collaborated with many musicians and ensembles in the
field of contemporary and improvised music, like Paul Lytton, Mats
Gustafsson, Michael Zerang, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Melvyn Poore, Paul Dutton,
Nicolas Collins, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and the Ebony Band. He has
performed in several compositions by the German composer Carola Bauckholt,
including a piece for voice and orchestra. Blonk is the founder and leader
of Splinks, a 15-piece orchestra playing his compositions, and BRAAXTAAL, an
avant-rock trio with synthesizer and drums.
THU. 03.18.04 / 10 PM
SUBTROPICS SOUND VIDEOS: Part 2
MIAMI BEACH CINEMATHEQUE, 512 Espa?ola Way, Miami Beach
Subtropics Sound Videos II curated by Gustavo Matamoros
will continue to present experimental video works specializing in sound in
the second Videos program during the Subtropics Experimental Music Festival.
The works vary in experimental style from computer animations with
electronic music to a 3-D presentation. Kristine Burns' 'Copper Islands' is
described as an abstract distillate of a symbolic relationship between
metallic sounds and largely monochromatic synthesized video. 'Painting The
Painting' by Katherine Liberovskaya and Phil Niblock documents the point of
view of the paint-brush during Graham Cantieni's creative process. The
Subtropics Sound Videos II will feature the following works: 'Hentracks on
Eternity' by Phillip Blackburn and Preston Wright; three pieces from 'Usi
Scrutati' by Lou Mallozzi; 'Vis a Vis' by Dennis Miller; 'Gesture #4' by
Edward Bobb; 'Copper Islands' by Kristine Burns; and 'Painting The Painting'
by Katherine Liberovskaya and Phil Niblock.
FRI. 03.19.04 & SAT. 03.20.04 / 10 PM
from NETHERLANDS: sound poet JAAP BLONK
PS 742, 1165 SW 6 ST, Little Havana
A self-taught composer, voice performer and sound poet,
Jaap Blonk believes in the power of the human voice, with or without words,
with or without melody. And once you hear Blonk's performance, you will too.
In a Dadist spirit, Blonk finds a common ground between music and poetry and
takes the concept of language to another level. Blonk will bring his
powerful stage presence and almost childlike freedom in improvisation to PS
742 during the Subtropics Experimental Music Festival. On Friday night's
program, Blonk will center on the sound poetry tradition including work by
Hugo Ball, Kurt Schwitters, Velimir Khlebnikov, Antonin Artaud and some of
his own. On Saturday night's program, Blonk will work with improvisation,
abstract voice sounds and the use of live electronics.
WEEK 4
03.24 ? 03.27
WED. 03.24.04 / 7 PM
BUGALLO / WILLIAMS PIANO DUO
SIDE BY SIDE: NANCARROW IN MIAMI
ROSEBRIAR, 226 NE 28th ST, Wynwood
Conlon Nancarrow's mechanical music comes to Miami. The
Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo, who have transcribed MacArthur genius Conlon
Nancarrow's music originally written for the player piano, will perform as
part of the Subtropics. Nancarrow (1912-1997) was an internationally
recognized composer who wrote rarely abstract music for the player piano
that has been described as having a 'polyphony of speeds'. The changes of
tempo and the shifts in rhythm are too challenging to be played by one
pianist. The duo has mastered performing the melodies that race against each
other at different speeds. The Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo, with pianists
Helena Bugallo and Amy Williams, has been committed to presenting concerts
of contemporary music since 1995. They have been featured performers at
numerous festivals internationally. Their repertoire includes works by John
Cage, Morton Feldman, Igor Stravinsky, Frederic Rzewski, Steve Reich, Gy?rgy
Ligeti, and Gy?rgy Kurt?g, as well as pieces by younger composers, many of
whom have written for the Duo. Recently, they have engaged in a number of
multimedia and transcription projects, working directly with composers
Jonathan Golove, Erik O?a, Jukka Tiensuu, and Lukas Foss.
THU. 3.25.04 / 7 PM
UNDERSTANDING SOUND SERIES: STEVE PETERS
BOOKS & BOOKS, 933 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach
Composer and sound artist Steve Peters will present
'HERE?INGS: A Sonic Geohistory', a new release, a book/CD combination.
'HERE?INGS: A Sonic Geohistory' is a patient, sensitive exploration of the
role of sound in knowing a place. Peters will discuss his process of
creating this work made over the course of a year at The Land, an art site
in the foothills of New Mexico's Manzano Mountains. The recordings and
accompanying texts evoke the sparse simplicity and subtle depth to be found
when we turn our attention toward the unremarkable sounds of an average
location.
THU. 03.25.04 & FRI. 03.26.04 / 10 PM
from AUSTRALIA: linguistics composer CHRIS MANN
iSAW, 12355 NE 13 Ave, North Miami
Attending a performance by Australian poet, writer,
performer and improviser Chris Mann is to embark on a perceptual
thrill-ride. Mann works in a compositional framework that he has developed
which he calls Compositional Linguistics. His work mainly focuses on the
technology and philosophy of speech. Mann identifies 'language [as] the
mechanism whereby you understand what I'm thinking better than I do. (Where
'I' is defined by those changes for which I is required)'. Chris Mann's
works for voice are based on complex texts, freely composed to allow a play
of wit and humor. He explores the textures and gestures of Australian
speech, with its rhythms and qualities of color, pitch, intonation and
emphasis. Mann has collaborated with the likes of John Cage and electronic
music pioneers Larry Polansky and Joel Chadabe. Mann will perform his latest
work, The Plato Songs, in a multi-channel performance space installation at
the interdisciplinary Sound Arts Workshop (iSAW).
SAT. 03.27.04 / 7 - 10 PM
from NEW MEXICO: sound artist STEVE PETERS
DORSCH GALLERY, 151 NE 24 ST, Wynwood
HERE?INGS is a patient, sensitive exploration of the role
of sound in knowing a place by sound artist Steve Peters. Steve Peters
creates music and sound works for dance, theater, radio, public spaces and
concert settings. Centered on recordings made over the course of a year at
The Land, an art site in the foothills of New Mexico's Manzano Mountains,
HERE?INGS evokes the sparse simplicity and subtle depth to be found when we
turn our attention toward the unremarkable sounds of an average location.
Peters' soundscapes are generally quiet, featuring just one or a few sound
makers at a time, and within earshot of farms, trains, and planes. HERE?INGS
was originally exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe. HERE?INGS
opens on 2004 Saturday, March 27, from 7-11pm at Dorsch Gallery. HERE?INGS
will be on exhibit from March 27 through April 10, 2004.
WEEK 5
03.31 ? 04.02
WED. 03.31.04 / 7 - 10 PM
BREEZEWAY: a sound installation by BUFO
FROST ART MUSEUM FIU, University Park Campus
Commissioned by State of Florida's Art in State Buildings,
artistic team BUFO comprised of Gustavo Matamoros and Shareyer Ataie created
BREEZEWAY, a sound installation in the Paul L. Cejas School of Architecture
building recently constructed on the main campus of Florida International
University and designed by New York-based architect Bernard Tschumi. Running
180 feet in length with 60 speakers placed 30-36 inches apart, BREEZEWAY is
a work unobtrusive to the physical structure of the building that yet
augments space, openness and accessibility. The sounds, that range from
incidental noises and sounds recorded mostly around the FIU campus, are
intended to accompany one along as one enters the school. The sound is
intended to create a subtle environment outside of typical daily experiences
that remind the walker-bys of both the artistic and technical wonder of the
buildings around them, as well as the uninhibited nature just underneath
their feet. In partnership with the Frost Art Museum at Florida
International University, BUFO will present the opening of BREEZEWAY on
Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 7pm at the Frost Art Museum at FIU. At the
Frost Art Museum, BUFO's Gustavo Matamoros and Shareyer Ataie will discuss
the development of BREEZEWAY. Following the presentation, BUFO will lead the
guests to the BREEZEWAY for an interactive performance with the
installation.
