I was just championing the inclusion of Throbbing Gristle's wonderful
"Hot on the Heels of Love" (from 1978) on the recent Rough Trade
Shops double CD compilation, when along comes Terranova's new one. I
mention these in the same breath, since they could almost come from
the same stable, give or take quarter of a century!
They are obviously big on the name changing front... having started
as Turntable Terranova, then dropping the first bit and going as
"Terranova" for their decent Close the Door album (from '99). Now
they re-emerge as Edition Terranova (why??) with a dark trip-hoppy
album titled "Hitchhiking Nonstop ... With No Particular Destination
(out on !K7).
After a quick skip through the album, I have to say the stand-out for
me is the madly punky screamer "Mongril" with vocal delivery courtesy
of Ariane Ari-Up (formerly of The Slits). This is also out as a
single, as is the Bob Marley track "Running Away" which is being
championed as the album's plug-track with mixes by Stereo MC's (whose
Cath Coffey is on vocal duty throughout the album), Bitcrush and
Naughty (whoever they may be.)
The dominatrix bit comes in with a track "Women Beat their Men"
(..."the men beat on the drum")
All in all, this is a great album to play LOUD in the car at night :-
