Squarepusher: Go Plastic
The long-awaited sequel to Feed Me Weird Things, Mr. Jenkinson
apparently having recovered from his Tyler Durden style changeover
problem and reverted to his normal, inspired, nonwanky self with a
fondness for Drums-Too-Fast-For-Normal-People (DTFFNP). This outing, he
has sandwiched the DTFFNP between loaves of Nothing and Everything,
thickly buttered with DSP and slathered in Mr. Jenkinson's own forehead
sweat from thousands of hours spent laboring over every individual
sample on the entire bloomin' record. Though the songs here are surely
more informed by SQP's ventures into noise and atmospherics, it's also
quite easily recognizable as SQP. He's back from the slippery edge of
no-wave free-for-alls and once again glued to his seat in front of a
teetering mass of black boxes with LED screens and suchlike. That or one
expensive computer. We're all very proud of his recovery and quite
fascinated with his new album, especially "I Wish You Could Talk" and
"Plainstow Flex Out".
To Rococo Rot and i-sound: Music Is A Hungry Ghost
Not sure how dated this one actually is, but I found it today, have
heard next to nothing about it, and it says "2001" on the release
information. Soundtracky, really, not in the Amon Tobin sense maybe, but
nonetheless reminds me of disconnected movie scenes which I can't put my
finger on. Definitely not gangster or horror movies, at any rate- quite
the opposite. "From Dream To Daylight", "Pantone" and "For A Moment"
stand out right away as songs worthy of the repeat button- all the
tracks on the album are about 4:15 or less! Violin on a couple tracks
hits the spot, and TRR's trad. sad-face riffs are omnipresent, which
equals big ups. My old roommate would have called this "good drinking
music". I would have agreed, with the addendum that it's still good even
if you don't drink, and whether you're alone or not.
