I was reading a few years ago I think in Mix Magazine that Portishead went to all the trouble to record the drum tracks first, mix them down to a stereo master, press those drum tracks to a vinyl master, and then dump that back into a computer, and everything else was recorded digitally. Not meant as a question, just an observation/recollection...

One step I read about which is missing in your post is that sometimes Barrow purposely trashes the vinyl before sticking the sounds back in the sampler. I'm not kidding.
