Amon Tobin does some of the finest sampling I have ever heard. He builds songs with enough variety so that they constantly grow and change, but with beats that are so much fun to dance to. Excellent listening in the bedroom or on the dancefloor. Especially if you have a lot of surplus energy. On Supermodified there are parts of most of the songs where he goes absolutely mad. Supermodified contains plenty of Tobin's trademark jazz drum breakbeats, which I'm really happy about. He takes some of the most amazing drumming every put on vinyl, and chops it up in even crazier ways. Supermodified also features the same combination of jazzy basses, horns, and strings together with wailing synthesizers that stood out in Tobin's earlier work. But it also covers plenty of new ground. For brevity's sake I'll only describe some of my favorite tracks: 1. Get Your Snack On - This track leads the album in really well. Heavy, pulsing octaves in the bass drive the song hard. A funky organ line and a big Amon Tobin bouncy beat make it perfect. 2. Four Ton Mantis - Another heavy, bouncing beat. There is no way to describe the piano in this track other than "cool." It also contains a great example of one of those parts I mentioned earlier where Tobin goes absolutely mad. 3. Slowly - A murky, laid back song with crazy breakbeats. Really. 4. Marine Machines - It sounds wet and slinky, with lots of sampled symphony orchestra and swimming reverb. The marchy beat is not his best, but the song makes up for it. It sounds like an underwater orchestra. And a bunch of underwater machines, of course. 7. Precursor - Tweeky as hell. I love it. Nervous jazz bass cuts perfectly compliment amazing beatboxing by Quadraceptor. I imagine the rest of the album will grow on me. That happened with Permutations. I recommend this record as an IDM must-have. -j --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
