the original poster should be aware that iaora tahiti and autoditacker are quite different from glam and the lithops material. the too pure albums are a bit more dubby, less experimental, obvious. glam, instrumentals, and the lithops stuff is way more introspective and out-there. eric onnow: blectum from blechdom radio show (cdr)

good point. Mom is strange band to me. I really was not into their music until I heard instrumentals and when I heard Lithops it really floored me. But if your into their earlier tracks then one should aproach these items cautiously. on another note, has anyone heard the newish surgeon album - force and form? Thoughts? -daniel

I picked this up mainly due to the obvious Coil homage (the album title was the name of Coil's first label, and all of the track titles are related to Coil in some way), and I was really impressed by it. I can hear an underlying influence of the early industrial stuff that Child admits to being a fan of (Coil, CabVolt, TG, etc.), but on top of that is some simply great minimal techno grooves. I dig it. Greg

Were any other big MoM fans as disappointed as I was by the Distroia EP? One of the things I've always loved about Mouse on Mars is that there's a real warmth to their sound even when they get way abstract (e.g. Glam), but Distroia's just as cold, digital, and glitchy as all that other crap you guys listen to. (just kidding, kinda) I hope this isn't their new direction. -d.w.

You know, I fail to see the attraction of clicks and pops, especially the 'skipping CD' sound that is so prevalent in the Oval tracks. I do CD mastering and some of these guys are making tracks entirely out of the sounds that I go to great lengths to keep out of music! Not to say that there isn't a place for this stuff, but hey guys -- if Pole or Oval has done it, it's been done -- no need for YOU to do it. Find some other way to make your point.

Dave, you're not a long. I'm a big MoM fan but I was disappointed with Distoria too. Their Pickly Dred Rhizzorns ep on Thrill Jockey/Sonig a little better but still nowhere near as good as Glam or the Lithops stuff. Beautiful, isn't it? I'm sure all of you, even those (lance :) who buy tons of music every month, get especially attached to certain albums. For me lately, it's been these 3: Beth Orton - Central Reservation Soul Coughing - El Oso Oval - Systemisch Systemisch is just killing me. I've listened to it so much lately, and every time it keeps rewarding me. It was superb listening on a train ride from Detroit to Montreal, it's great going-to-bed music, and equally good for at-work music. I find it to be so warm and organic that it's odd to see people not "get it". This is not to say that those of you who dislike Oval are less-educated listeners or any crap like that, just that it's stricken me so dramatically from the moment I got it. Maybe my ears and mind were just primed to go into that direction (disclaimer: I love Pole, too). Tracks 1 and 6 are especially gorgeous; 1's clicks and deep bass really do it for me, and the rising, optimistic melody of track 6 is lovely (plus the Aphex SawII-ish pads work great, too).
