Ok I have been listening to IDM type music for about 8 years now,and especially lately there has been a lot of beautiful and intelligent music neing released. I am especially fond of pretty much all Warp material and I really loved the BoC album which I bought soon after it was released last year. Then there comes Bola-Soup: Afters so many recomendations from magazine reviews, lists and friends I bought the album at Christmas time. Since then I have given it several listens but I am still completely mystified as to why it has been hyped up so much!! The entire album to me is so incredibly basic. It sounds like a guy with a decent MIDI module who wants to use as many tracks of the preset sounds as possible and then put a little reverb and delay in parts. There are a few interesting sounds at times but in general I can't get over how simple the song structures, melodies and sounds are. Based on everyone else opinions I was really sure that I was missing something but after many listens I stick to my original opinion. HYis tracks sounbd exactly the way mine did when I first started fooling arround with MIDI composition. Maybe I should send an old demo tape to Skam. -intellijel

As someone who *hated* the BoC album for the first six months I owned it (citing pretty much the same reasons you dislike Bola), I can see where you're coming from, but strongly disagree. Bola is good stuff. It took me about ten listens to really get hooked on it, but once I did, it didn't come out of my walkman for weeks. It's simple, repetitive, and relatively unchallenging. It's also warm, groovy, and catchy as all get-out. It's not the kind of thing I'd put on if I wanted to hear interesting sounds or cutting-edge sonic innovation; it's just a great chill-out disc. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that; had this album come out four years ago, it'd be on everyone's list of venerated hall-of-fame must-haves. And, indeed, I have no doubt that much of the material is rather old, seeing as how "Forcasa 3" originally came out in 95...still, that doesn't make it any less valid. It's evident to me that a lot of care, thought, and attention to detail went into every second of the thing. I used to despise BoC because it sounded to me like somebody farting around with their equipment for the first time after having heard some Autechre beats and watching Sesame Street; it took literally months of listening for me to realize there was a lot more than that going on (though hearing "Hi Scores" really helped change my opinion of them; I'd love to get that whole EP on CDR someday). Actually, right now, I'm facing a similar situation with Jega. Picked up _Spectrum_ last week and I'm waiting for it to grow on me. But I'm not holding my breath. Blah. What was my point again?

It was alright, no album of the year though, just an album everyone knew and bought (well at least some).

I thought precisely the same thing. I only liked that one track that was released on 7" first, then there's like three others on there that were either on Skampler or other sources. The rest is kind of throw back material.

Hmmm...more downtempo stuff for Skam? I think they are looking for more of the Autechre/Funkstorung, type of thing....kind of like what MAS has been doing for years. : ) Rusty

Uhm, isn't that what Skam has been doing for years too? What are you talking about? Have you heard Skam005 by Bola? Aaron
