Hello. We've all got them in our collection -- excellent IDM albums that no-one else on the planet seems to own. What have you got lurking in your collection that you reckon everyone else would love? My nomination is Node's self-titled album, released on Deviant about three years ago. If you're a fan of Tangerine Dream's early 70s stuff, particularly 'Phaedra' and 'Rubycon', you'll love Node's album. Very organic, richly textured sounds, rhythms being generated by cunning envelope manipulation. The music shifts and twists like a Moebius strip -- different phrases intertwining then unraveling to shoot off in different directions. Fans of Autechre's more ambient moments should get a kick out of it. Node recorded the album entirely with decades-old analogue equipment. Huge Moogs, Mellotrons and other gargantuan patch-bay devices. The resulting tracks sound very paradoxical -- nostalgic and modern at the same time. Node - 'Node' Deviant 1995 DVNT5CD 1. Propane 14m50s Also worth getting hold of is the 'Terminus' single, which is actually a recorded of a live gig they did at London's Paddington Station: Node - 'Terminus' Deviant 1995 DVNT7CDS 1. Terminus (Call At All Stops) 16m17s Node are unlikely to record together again, basically being a 'super group' comprised of Dave Bessell, Gary Stout, Ed Buller and Flood, so snap up these two releases whilst they're still in print. I've mentioned the Node album several times on this list since its release, but no-one's ever responded, Very surprising, given that it was perhaps the most impressive and unique IDM releases of 1995. I won this cd in a contest about a month ago.. the name of the group is CHI and they are from Amsterdam. They use electronic synthesis (samplers, fx processing), live hand percussion, guitar riffs, flutes and reed instruments, chimes,.. things,.. and alot of reverb. Their music has an oriental flavor to it and is relatively dark/ambient. It's pretty nice.. recorded in the mid 80's. I don't know if anyone has any idea who they are.. I won a contest on this site called http://music.takeaway.net and they let me choose any cd from their collection of "lesser known" artists. After listening to a bunch of their ra. files in their jukebox section I chose this one. Yes, this is an excellent album, ideal for those who yearn for the days when Tangerine Dream still made music worth listening to (70-86 -- not a bad run).
