Just got finished listening to the new Combustible Edison album, "The Impossible World". Yes, the same Combustible Edison who were at the forefront of that whole "Cocktail Nation" lounge revival thing. I've always liked them, but wouldn't've considered them on-topic for IDM before. However, this new disc is co-produced by Scanner, and is an really interesting mixture of ComEd's neo-exotika and Robin's electronic blurping. His touch can be felt on at least half of the tracks on the album, and there are a bunch of between track interludes that he is obviously responsible for. Best of all is the final track, "Utopia (Scanner's reprise)", which is a beautiful dubby ambient remix of the album's opening track. Wonderful stuff, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how they translate the electronic elements into a live context when they play here in a couple of weeks. Greg

What is a comparable sound? This Combustible Edison seems like it may resemble The Gentle People or other ez/chee-z electronic hybrids. NP: Carcass - Wake Up and Smell The Carcass

There's a *little* of that, but for the most part, it's not as blatantly electronic as the Gentle People, etc. And I think ComEd have always drawn from a different area of the "lounge" pool - while GP and others are heavily influenced by EZ-listening pop sounds, ComEd are more of the exotika/tiki/Esquivel school. So yeah, there are a few similarities, but all in all, I wouldn't use the Gentle People as a point of reference. Greg
