If anyone can point me towards a FAQ on PC hard drive recording, I'd appreciate it -- I haven't been able to find anything close to what I need through the usual search engines. The ultimate question I'm trying to answer is "Are the line inputs on an AWE32 going to give me decent quality when archiving material from tape/vinyl to CD-R and/or MP3, and if not, what should I be looking for?" -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ::: Internet Music Wantlists: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo/Wantlists

Go to www.missionrec.com -- they not only sell all the stuff you're likely to need at decent prices, it's the home of the PCDAW and MACDAW mailing lists. DAW meaning Digital Audio Workstation.

Creative Labs are famous for cutting major corners on DtoA and AtoD convertors, analogue circuitry, etc. So I wouldn't use such a thing -- I think they're crap. But you might think it's good enough -- you won't know until you try. Ensoniq Audio PCI cards are cheap (< $50) and have halfway decent convertors. I use a Turtle Beach Pinnacle (about $400) but I don't think you need that kind of firepower for this application. Pinnacle analogue recordings sound great, very low noise. And if you're really finicky you'll get a card with a digital input and an outboard AtoD/DtoA convertor. But that could run you upwards of $800.

Soundblasters are pretty much crap -- but I've gotten good results when recording with my AWE64 for mp3ing. I can't really tell the difference, but I haven't tried. Now I just need to post more on-topic posts than off. On Thu, 28 May 1998, at 16:39:19, Chaircrusher wrote:
