Doug @ Sprout/Hydrant is working on his own material for release sometime this year. Jeff Allen (aka Brittle Ones, Baretta, Chipsett) might be releasing a cdr-EP very soon. I've got a recent 2-track cdr in which Varathane (Jeff Allen) is prepared to release as well. Here's a mini- review of these tracks. ps-- Andrew Duke charted this cdr in January, i think. www.hydrant-records.com/about_sprout.html

"High Plains Drifter".. a very rhythmic and technically driven soundscape of simple melodies that morph together subtly. Slowly paced yet very fluid. It's the simplicity of this track that takes it to another level. A relaxed yet penetrating bleep and beat rhythm twists into an almost invisible sound that is hard to describe, but is very direct, straightforward, and easy to absorb. The beats are spread out evenly in a beat-clap-beat-clap pattern, with a funky little watery-acid twitch to make your legs shake. Very cute indeed.."High Plains Drifter" takes you to an area that is loaded with nice thoughts, and a drifting one at that. "Hourglass".. a rubbery bassline snaps alongside a sheet of alien sounds and high-notes. This track flows on a different current compared to "High Plains Drifter". There's a subtle hum of an airplane that spins around with what sounds like Plastikman using The Orb's equipment. Twisted electronica tied loosely to an ever persistent ambient wash of sounds. Within four minutes (which seems kind of short), you get a good sense of the sounds that Varathane wants to show you, but this track could use a few more of those lush 4/4 beats that pop in towards the end. Of course it would be nice to hear where Varathane wants to take his sounds, as this two-track-teaser seems to moving in a good direction thus far. A slight contrast if you put these tracks next to the 'Rudy Brown Primer' on Hydrant, though.
