Napster has become quite a phenomenon. Since my
friends and I all have the university's T1 connection,
there isn't much music under the sun that escapes our
possession; except IDM, there have been some good
remix finds by Photek, Plaid, etc. but unless you can
call Paul Van Dyk IDM, you aren't going to find much
(not a flame- I must admit that I like his
stuff...purists be damned). Anyhow, since everybody is
sucking the hell out of the university's bandwidth
with mp3's (our T1 performs less than a 56K right
now), I think that the Napster server is gonna get
firewalled soon. This has already happened on some
campuses. I think this is already happening on a
larger scale because the gigabyte count and songs
available count is simply going through the roof. I've
seen the maximum jump up to 3200 gigabytes of mp3's.
It's exponential growth will be its downfall in the
end, IMO. I want to know how this thing even works-
what I mean by that is...who is getting money to
develop the client upgrades, provide the server space,
etc., etc. I don't see any point on the line in which
someone is reaping some kind of benefit. Is Napster
the result of some underground programmers who want to
"free the music" and do it for the sake of its
rebellion or is it a corporate sponsored?
This has gone way off topic but I think it's
important, given that many listmembers here actively
seek out mp3's. Anyhow, do with this what you will
