24 bit 96K sound should be bloody marvellous, DVD-Audio as it's being touted. But there are no DVD players around that can read that quality yet, (I've not even heard of a demo disc that contains that quality.) All the players I've seen seem geared towards the video aspect of the format. (Thomson, Pioneer DVL 9, Meridian 586 and Panasonic DVD-A100), as a video artist who deals with music I've been seriously looking into this format as the one that makes perfect sense for what I do. The truly shocking aspect of these players is how piss poor their reproduction of current standard CD's is, I've no idea why. It must be the manufacturers concentration on video that's causing this audio shortfall. Saying that, the video isn't really that much better than VHS (IMHO), it's MPEG-2 about as good as laserdisc, but when you consider the digital artifacting effects of MPEG-2 (really ugly with fast scenes) I'd rather stick to standard VHS. At least you know where you are with VHS, it's shit but at least it's consistent, and doesn't go weird and blobby on you. I wish Hi8 or SVHS got a bit more consumer interest, those formats would probably be better placed to replace VHS in the home by now. I agree with Eric, it is bloody annoying to see what happens to your Beta SP master after VHS has finished with it, it's even more soul destroying (sometimes) to see what MPEG-2 can do to it. Don't buy one. The software isn't right, the full audio is not available, the visual quality is no better than what we have, and recordable DVD is a very, very, very long way away.
