ok... so i picked up carl craig's "more songs about food..." today, and on first listen, i like it quite a lot... very warm, layered, subtle--has a similar effect, for me, that speedy j's "g spot" has. now here's the dumb question. i know carl craig has been around for quite awhile, but this is my first experience of him--what genre, exactly, is this? i'm guessing "detroit," since that seems to be where he's from... i've just never gotten into detroit techno before--somehow i didn't think i'd like it. but this is great. so can anyone give me a brief rundown, some suggestions, etc.? thanks billions. on another note entirely--a friend of mine at liquid sky last week (well, whatever the record store inside is called) turned me on to two 12"s by someone german called "kanzelramt." who the hell is it? it's great! thanks for yr patience... phil p h i l i p h u g h s h e r b u r n e - - - - - - b r o w n u n i v e r s i t y - - - - - - - - - 4 0 1 . 4 5 3 . 4 1 1 6 - - - - - - - - - - - - "everywhere, organized music is traversed by a line of abolition--just as a language of sense is traversed by a line of escape--in order to liberate a living and expressive material that speaks for itself and has no need of being put into a form." --deleuze & guattari

Yup. Carl's one of the Detroit pioneers and innovators, up there with Derrick May and Juan Atkins (and Kevin Saunderson, and Eddie Fowlkes, and...)

Well, if you're looking for Detroit techno, the place to be (virtually) is Submerge. Located in the heart of Detroit, they have the best Web-based record store around for the city's music (www.submerge.com). Suggestions? Try Carl Craig's "Psyche/BFC: Elements 1989-1990" compilation for more great stuff by him. If you're looking for a good overview of current artists, the "Beyond the 3rd Wave" compilation on Astralwerks is probably a decent choice, since it's got tracks by 10 different Detroit artists. Labels to look for include Metroplex, Transmat, Planet E (record labels owned by Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Carl Craig, respectively). This is just the tip of the iceberg, of course - keep looking, and I hope you enjoy the stuff you end up getting. Kanzleramt is not an artist but a german label. I think you can find a discog on hyperreal but i'm not sure. Marc
