Actually, there were some advancements:
sl1200mk4 - bpm counters
sl1600 - the elimination of styli through class C laser technology.
cartridges are still available, but vary in size. the tonearm guided by the
laser.
sl1600mk2 - scratch pad added, eliminates having to touch the record
sl1600mk3 - same as mk2, but is invisible and has a better motor.
sl2003mk0 - this one has automatic bpm adjustment when connected to another
sl2003, and also has all the features of the sl1600, levitates in the air,
making it impossible to skip the record, and comes in white casing.
sl2004 - same as sl2003, but is invisible, meaning only the record and
buttons are visible, for those techno-gadget-wizz geeks.
of course everyone turns the auto-bpm adjustment, etc. off on their sl2003's
becos it's stupid, the others who don't care about levitation and laser
guided tracking just stick to the old reliable sl1200mk2.
