Some thoughts on mainstream media and IDM: Rolling Stone gave SAW II and I Care Because you Do 4 stars. Their highest rating is 5 stars(classic), which they usually only reserve for boxed sets or re-issues. Pulse mentions Aphex now and again. It seems like there's one person on the staff who's really into him. The cover of 'I care' was included in the best albums of the year section, and someone suggested a guy whose desert island discs included Phillip glass check out Aphex's "Rubarb Donkey." hehe. On MTV when the Bjork album came out and she announced the US tour, Kurt Loder said Bjork would be touring with "the equally brilliant and enigmatic Aphex Twin." Lollapalooza: Although its been shown on Lollapalooza that meathead teenagers can get into hip-hop no problem (Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys, Ice Cube) I doubt very strongly they would appreciate IDM very much, which is really at times very avante garde, and way above their heads I believe. Orbital is actually one of the more down to earth and straight ahead acts we talk about on the list, but I still don't think they'd be excepted at all. The reason they can accept hip-hop and not IDM is that hip-hop is mainly about agresssion, which they understand from punk, alternative, etc. IDM requires more work becuase you create your own meanings. The farthest my Hip Hop teenage brother ventures into my IDM collection is Wagonchrist( I think he said "Damn!"), some Nightmares on Wax, and some Chemical Brothers things. He thinks U-ziq is dumb and likes 2 or 3 Aphex songs. Orbital he thinks is wimpy, and he doesn't get ambient at all, though he did like the Far Out Son of Lung 12' when I played it for him. Anyway, the best idea for Orbital would be if they took the second stage during Metallica's set. During my one and only Lollapalooza experience the second stage was acutally much more interesting than the first. Not only could I actually get close enough to see the people without getting trampled on, but it had a wonderful vibe going for it. Not the the "I'm going to kick your ass in the name of love" vibe from the first stage. On the second stage: Stereolab (oh my god), Pharcyde, Shonen Knife, Cypress Hill... -Fresh ========================================================================= Fullerton College claims no responsibility to the opinion expressed above (This is an automatic stamp from our Email system and not from the user.) =========================================================================

I hope they would be on the second stage. I don't think I could stand the sight of alterna-teens body surfing during Kein Trink Wasser. --+ Brian +-------------------- http://world.std.com/~bgoddard/ -------------------------------

Yeah, isn't it *terrible* when *people you don't respect* enjoy things that you enjoy? It means that *you might have something in common with them.* C. -- cspot@hyperreal.com (Chris.Hilker)
