A quick review of a really cool release:
The Electric Family - Mariopaint (Irdial) 55ird com3
This cd was either an attempt to do something totally unique or a snub
of the traditional ways of making music. The reason I say this is
because all 8 tracks of the cd were written, played, mixed and produced
entirely on a Nintendo video game called Mariopaint. Each of the
artists, which included Anthony Manning, Spy vs Spy, Ray Tracing, 2007,
Spacemole, Mimi Magik, The Gas Man, and Beautyon, were put in a room
with a t.v., nintendo and a DAT recording device and given four days to
come up with a song. The result is the aforementioned 8 track cd.
Regardless of intent, it turned out to be a masterpiece. It is truely
amazing what good musicians can produce with such limited equipment,
sounds and time. The songs on this cd range from ambient bleeping to
looped distorted techno. An amazing cd. Buy it!
