As I mentioned the other day, I picked this up last weekend, and here's the lowdown. Looks like Clear are getting their catalog numbers almost as confused as Rephlex, and they've only been going a few months. CLR415 and CLRX415 (the limited 1000 run of see-thru stuff) is to be released on 30th May. It is the Spacepimp EP by Spacepimp, the artist formerly know as Acen. 3 varied tracks as follows, I introduce each with the related quote scratched in the runout area: 1. The Pimp (The Lino Cut) Big fat krazy back in the day lino biznizz. This track neatly bridges the gap between the out-and-out retro electro of the Jedi Knights' "Antacid" remix, and the new school of detroit electro. It has a very "digital" feel, but none of the "fresh" gimmicks etc. The tempo is around 120bpm which puts it in retro territory as opposed to the 135bpm we typically find used by such as Drexciya, Aux 88 and RAC in their electro tracks. 2. Space Chase Dreamin' trooper taro acen cez and clear - the funk iz here. The funk iz here for sure. While this track suffers from a not very interesting junglish break, the bassline is unlike anything I've heard in a jungle track - it's so funky! Yet at the same time it has a techno attitude as well. This is not like the "ambient/jungle" of the Artcore compilation, but perhaps falls somewhere between Reload's "Nemm" and Luke Vibert's "Plug 1" EP. 3. K-9 Law Respect to Jedi Knights of the round table , Android, Angry D, Jake Slazenger, Dr Rockit & All Clear Crew. K-9 Law shares with the Jedi Knights' "We want to funk you" (OK I know that's not the title) a nod to Zapp's "More bounce to the Ounce". This time it's just the rhythm that gets used, not the bassline, and this time we're in dirty funky 100bpm territory. Chock full of squeaky and creaking funky guitar-type sounds, bumping along on that break, this just drips with funk. In all a most enjoyable EP, possibly my favourite from the Clear series- just as funky as the Jedi Knights, but more varied; A whole lot better than Bantha trax in most respects, and just more fun than the somewhat cerebral Plaid EP.
