V/A - The Knights Who Sat Dot (DOT)
1. Quant - "Intestinal Sound" [from DOT1203]
Starts out with funky alternation of bleeps & bloops, a little
bass blip that sound like a guy talking real low, a resonated acid bit
and a funky organ chord thrown in each pattern. After a bit breakbeats
take over but they keep it moving nicely. The bleeps become more
harmonious, some synth chords make it peaceful for a bit, we lose the
awesome groove. It changes and comes back along with the breakbeat work.
Very nice.
2. Hab - "Save the Adults"
Happy synth notes at beginning, porta down and then come back in
periodically. Flanged breakbeat stuff. Not the best Hab I have heard.
3. Friend - "The Sauna Affair"
Lots of alright but too smooth breakbeat work. After a couple
mins into it some toy piano or vibes come in repeating the same bit. Then
it gets dark with a dark bass. Breakdown and then bass is accompanied by
some resonation effects. Builds to some heavier, more complex
breakbeats.. becomes more angrry and chaotic and then leaves you
wondering what it was that was so bad that just happened. A nice track.
4. Tupilaq - "Married the Dragon"
Not great breakbeat stuff backed by some peaceful chords and a
lady singing about flying away and stuff it sounds like. Not my cup of
tea.
5. Quant - "I Like This." [from DOT1203]
And so do I. Cool vocoder effects but I dislike the simple 2
chord smooth wahwahwah progression. Gets really funky tho, I guess those
chords were asking for some funk. Kinda too smooth of a groove, however.
6. Roupe - "Time Lapse"
Lame uncreative synth chords and repetive not-so-bad breakbeat.
After 3.5 mins it gets a little more funky only for about .5 mins.
7. Friend - "Eight Ball" [from DOT1204]
Laid back beat and peaceful, chillin, lazy chords, bass, melody.
After 3 mins beat turns into junglish. Not bad. I've heard the chord
progression elsewhere I'm sure, tho. But that is true with most songs,
only the very most original leave me without that feeling. Oh, this one
is tedious too. Although it does pick up from the laidback beginning, it
goes on for 10 mins without any new ideas.
8. Tupilaq - "Pollen 23" [from DOT1202]
Slightly distorted big ass groove beat, chopped up a bit. Not too
fast. Some different effects such as flange as a melody comes in slowly.
Crunchy beats and a dreamlike, wary, wandering melody. Leaves us with
this melody at the end. Excellent track.
9. Hab - "Pan" [from DOT1201]
Beautiful melody stuff, wonderful. Creative groovy beat along
with some bleeps. Autechre-ish beat. A normal short high-freq breakbeat
loop backing it. Emotional, great.
10. Placid Angels - "Beauty of Life"
Beginning sounds tribal or arabic (perhaps the scale?).. A beat
fades in. Pretty chords. Nothing I haven't heard before. Not boring,
sounds nice, like most of this disc, but nothing special. I hate when
people don't make things that are special! ;)
11. Doctor Kosmos & Friend - "I Love You (Huh)"
Crazy screechy bleepy loop at beginning, then backed by a normal
hiphop-ish beat. We halt all that except for the bass drum to a rumbling
bass and it comes back less crazy. Groovy breakbeat stuff (not fast).
Looping of strange things into the mix like a guy saying something gruff
and flanged like "I love you....huh" ;) Again later we have some guys in
chorus saying "I love you" over and over? Fun, funny, funky, and other
words that begin with fun, track.
All in all, 4 or 5 great tracks. The rest I could do without, but none
are especially awful.
c.g ..
an annoying message will probably follow. stupid program
