Feeling for you man . I have been through Typhoons in Asia . and my
family are from Fiji .. so have had their whole island destroyed before.
// on a positive Tech note .. I was reading that the Wi-Fi
networks in Florida
where up and running soon after .. with many providers allowing free
access for a while, and in many instances these networks where the
only forms of communication available ..
I have a close friend who is a housetrucker .. very self sufficient.
Uses a single solar sell (fits on his SUV roof). to charge all
his batteries ..
uses an old cellphone to get dial up off his laptop .. runs a 12v
soundsystem
that rocks the party
he has done a lot of experimenting to find the best battery
sources that can
be charged from the low currents that solar provides..
looking at putting together my own system ..
// Also a few years back . went to a outdoor dance party in NZ . where the
whole system was run off . mobile water generators that we put in the
river ..
We do a lot of outdoor events here . where we run of generators .. the
oldest being one that was used on a mine in the 1960 .. was basically
a tractor motor strung to a big dynamo .
The power off the geny gave a very unique an sweet hum ' that would
change in pitch slightly when the bass swelled ..
Certainly keeping note of alternative power supplies .. but there is a
point where data with corrode ' and a lot of computing equipment is
voltage sensitive .. so power supplies must be stable ... another
aspect which make the equation more complex ..
Bootstrapping tech is fine . but many of the systems we now use can
be very dependent on a broad host of stable infrastructure .
I guess I'm admitting . that I don't want to have to walk away from my
technology ..
// Makes me think of Mad Max 'beyond the thunderdome' when Max
grabs the record off the feral kids . chucks it on the old gramophone
winds it up and 'viola music ..
Tech with a limited redundancy !
