If you decide studio monitors are for you, you'd probably get a lot out of
a pair of KRK K-Roks, which can be gotten for $250/pr new; go up to $400
and get yourself an accompaying studio amp (which may sound better, and
last longer, than your home stereo receiver).
It probably doesn't make much of a difference, but I find electronic music
in general sounds better on monitors with a flat, uncolored response.
Since IDM seems to put such a premium on sonic diversity, I'd say it's
especially so with said topic of list discussion.
Consumer-oriented speakers tend to subtly (or not so subtly) emphasize
certain spectrums, and depending on make, deteriorate with heavy use.
Professionally-oriented gear is designed to be hammered day-in, day-out.
Disclaimer: I'm a KRK owner. Tannoy, Mackie, etc. all have
similarly-priced offerings in the marketplace. My suggestion would be to
go to a Guitar Center with that CDR of your favorite tracks and listen to
a few different pair of low-priced studio monitors and see which sounds
best.
