:: bollywood toolshed ::
headlining the billing on friday night is graham massey's 14 piece
experimental live outfit toolshed, playing alongside visuals from soup
collective and award-winning indian filmmakers sankalp meshram and ruchika
oberoi. toolshed has been a hothouse of mancunian creativity for several
years, and a breeding ground for many innovative groups from homelife to
simian. taking graham's influence by indian music as a starting point, the
visuals will go beyond the current fascination for bollywood kitsch to
explore the deeper roots of indian visual culture, mixing material from
classic 70s bollywood cinema with the folk and religious iconography that
inspired it and contemporary film sequences shot in both manchester and mumbai
:: meam + mumbai-manchester remix ::
skam record's unique av crew meam present their fluid mix of digital
graffiti and dirty beats, along with a live mix of the mumbai-manchester
remix project. this on-going project exploring the potential of remixing
and digital processing for unlocking new global sounds began with leading
indian classical musicians shubha mudgal & aneesh pradhan going into the
studio to rework the mancunian electronica of v/vm! meam take this
collision of musical systems to the next stage by remixing the remix live
in sound and moving image
:: swaraj with eikon visuals ::
leading lights of the asian breaks scene swaraj introduce the cutting edge
of uk-asian culture with shiva live featuring nerm & adhesive alongside
chorisala mc and live percussion from renu lazyfingers. they will be
performing alongside a visual set by eikon in an av collaboration that has
become an integral part of swaraj's numerous club nights and tours
:: urban sonic ::
friday night ends with the hookt club featuring manchester's new generation
of hip hop talent presented by urban sonic. a raw urban undercurrent to the
soulful and funky sound usually associated with mancunian hip hop comes via
most wanted's m16, playing alongside primal, hookt residents and the always
excellent compound
SENSURROUND ON SATURDAY :: 04.05.02
:: bongo maffin ::
one of the african continent's most celebrated live outfits, bongo maffin,
will present their stunning live set at sensurround, introducing kwaito -
the urban sound of south africa - to the uk. combining an international
club sound with an african sensibility and style, kwaito ranges between raw
urban grooves and delicious contemporary soul, and is best described as
down tempo house shot through with hip hop and african chants. bongo
maffin's performance at sensurround will be the first time the group have
been reunited since bass player and founder-member appleseed was convicted
of work permit irregularities and deported to his native zimbabwe!
:: dj woody & dj as-if with tron2 & soup collective ::
at the beginning of the sensurround tour the table gimp's dj woody was
hotly tipped to be a future world scratch champion. now that the tour
reaches its finale in manchester woody returns with his potential realised
- the newly crowned world itc champion! playing alongside him on the tour
has been dj as-if, the first female finalist of the dmc scratch
championship. their explosive partnership is transformed into a multimedia
feast by the soup collective, and is accompanied by uk breakdance champions
tron2 and a special appearance by manchester's first lady of soul, veba!
:: ataklan with darkjazz & segun ::
rapso is a distinctive carribbean sound that mixes lyrical rap with a ragga
attitude and calypso beats. reflecting the diverse influences that make
trinidad so unique - from africa, south america and beyond - rapso has
fused street poetry with the non-stop party of carnival. having lifted the
roof when he played on the trinidad leg of the sensurround tour, one of the
leading lights of the rapso scene ataklan will be coming to the uk for a
lyrical jam with manchester wordsmiths darkjazz and segun
:: scalene by battery operated ::
regular futuresonic conspirateurs battery operated will premier their
scalene international remix project with audiovisual contributions by
artists from montreal, melbourne and manchester
:: klub kwaito ::
the sensurround weekend is brought to a close with a club night featuring
south africa's "allstar" dj cleo and and manchester's riton. cleo is south
africa's most established kwaito dj, and the one who has remained most true
to the kwaito sound. riton meanwhile has produced twisted club classics for
grand central records, treading a journey between house and hip hop that is
manchester's closest answer to the kwaito sound
