In my opinion, this statement is quite "pie in the sky," especially considering that so many new artists are simply re-creating things that older, more established artists have been doing for years (and have since moved on). Buying a load of debut records smacks of indie-elitist mentality, focusing only on what's new and undiscovered instead of just what's good. A lot of the reason people first start listening to IDM is because it's refreshingly different, and involves some thought, and isn't "all about the melody." So, it makes sense that the artists follow suit and make things that are more complex, require more effort, and are generally "about more than just the melody." Imagine all the house fans who heard early Warp records and said "this isn't house -- it's too complex!" or acid fans who bought early aphex and hear a happy non-acid track mixed in there with some great acid tracks. So now we're saying the same thing? Confield is completely different from other "new idm" (which, ironically, sounds more like OLD idm), yet praise "new idm" artists that aren't bringing anything new to the table. Granted, it's not all about being an innovator, but a lot of this genre is based on thinking outside the box. Many of the reviews that get on the list nowadays are *still* referencing records that came out in '95-'97, yet these are your heralded "new artists." I'm hardly a fanboy, but jeez, give credit where credit is due. derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
