I'd recommend reading two things, Sebastian. "Newman: The Instant" and "The Sublime and the Avant-Garde," both brief essaysby Jean-Pierre Lyotard. The former is a simple introduction to Lyotard's take on the sublime [breaking from both Burke and Kant], and the latter is a much more detailed analysis. One of his major points is that the avant-garde often forgets the possibility of nothing; in the case of music, of NO sound, NO melody, nothing figuratively digstinguishable. While many IDMers still work within those conventions you're looking for, others have realized the fact that by not PRESENTING but actually being the PRESENCE, they are exploring exciting and uncharted territory. peace m... _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
