Not true. Open Mind has both turntables and CD players, allowing you to
listen to anything they have in stock. And basically any DJ-oriented store
will allow you to listen to vinyl (don't know the status of CDs), such as
Tweekin', Clear, Compound, Housewares, Soundworks. And Aquarius has a
well-stocked listening station, with probably 50 or so CDs in it, and I'm
sure if you asked nicely they'd put on just about any ol' thing to give you
a taste.
In short, there are plenty of places to listen before you buy in SF.
