You know what? When the guy on stage is jacking his laptop, there is something you're supposed to be doing besides staring at the man behind the mouse. It's called dancing. God bless the headbanger kids of Iowa City -- THEY were dancing to Kid606. Cex has a different approach -- he's all about feeling the crowd, interacting verbally, and putting on a show. I love what he does live. He manages to be humorous, crazy, geeky, and genuine at the same time. I think that the clowns who complain the most about what a laptop rocker is doing are the ones who know the least about what it takes to do anything interesting on a laptop for an hour. For me live sets are extremely busy experiences of listening, adjusting levels, tweaking, figuring out why I can't hear what I want. If I do get a minute where I'm not averting disaster, I'll look at the crowd. The performer's job is to provide the jams. The rest is up to you. If you're feeling what performer are doing, let them know. I also get the opposite side of this picture -- hearing performers bitch about the kids who though he was DJing when he was playing live, the fact that no one dances to anything they don't recognize. The sad fact is that this is new music, and the majority of people don't want to hear new music. They want to hear music that's just like the music they already know. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
