Hate to burst your bubble but Aphex's Selected Works II is one of the 'new age' classics of our time, but above and beyond any stereotypes, there have been some excellent releases. I always saw a corrolation in SanFran between the development of the Hearts of Space record label, Jonah Sharps Reflective, and Asphodel, who released the really 'new age' Swarms of Drones series a couple years back. Check out Steve Roach or Vidna Obmana on Hearts of Space for some really good dark ambient music. Windy and Carl or Stars of the Lid on Kranky is about as new age as you can get... who said this: "Your parents listened to Tangerine Dream, you listen to Kranky." old Klause Schultze is really weird dark stuff, Brian Eno pretty much wrote the book on new age. Monolake, Burger/Ink, most Ninja Tune records seem really mellow to me. Kruder and Dorfmeister, Theivery Corporation, are ready for the elevator. Like IDM in 10 years, there's a lot of crap in any new age section. There are however some really good pre-IDM pieces of electronic music that shouldnt be overlooked. Just be selective and listen with an open mind. On 3 Mar 2001, at 15:16, Lee Azzarello wrote:

Exactly. The words New Age Music conjure up visions of reiki, shiatsu and other types of holistic massage background relaxing atmosphere-setting ambience. Nothing wrong with *that*, but it ain't IDM.
